Leaving the industrial centers of Akron and Cleveland behind, you are pleasantly surprised at the quiet beauty that exists here. An area that was once victim to urban sprawl now boasts clean marshland and serene wooded areas. Whether hiking, biking, or enjoying the trains and waterfalls, this park truly has something for everyone. Check out our 4 ways to spend the day at Cuyahoga National Park!
A Little History
This land once belonged to Native American Indian tribes and was later polluted beyond recognition by urban factories and a local junkyard. The Cuyahoga River was once referred to as the river that “oozes rather than flows” due to the amount of trash and waste in the river. It actually caught on fire over 10 different times throughout the 1800-1900’s and helped to garner support for the Clean Water Act. It finally became a National Recreation area in 1974 and then a National Park in 2000. Cuyahoga National Park is an incredible story of redemption. If you only have a day to spend in Cuyahoga, check out some of these options:
Take a hike
We chose to hike The Ledges trail due to its moderate ease and abundance of beautiful sights. It is a 1.8 mile mostly flat loop. This is a very kid friendly hike that is heavily shaded and features slot style canyons, wooden boardwalks, lots of canyons and rocks to climb around and a cave. Great hike for kids, beginners, and people who are looking for one hike in the park that gives you great “bang for your buck”. Other top hikes in the park are Brandywine Falls (1.4 mile Brandywine Gorge Loop) and Blue Hen Falls (0.2 miles).
Grab a bike
The Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath trail travels the length of the park and beyond for a total of 101 miles (one way!). Riding a section of this mostly crushed stone trail is a great way to see the park and get some exercise. We rode the trail near scenic Beaver Marsh where there is a large parking lot as well as a farmers’ market with lunch options, fruit and ice cream stands. There are multiple bike rental shops near the towpath including https://www.centurycycles.com/
Grab a bite to eat
Szalay’s farm and market is a fun stop to grab lunch, ice cream and fruit. They have lots of seating on outdoor swinging dinettes, but be warned, it is cash only. They do have an ATM on site! We enjoyed ice cream and the most delicious roasted and buttered corn on the cob. They have fun swinging rockers to enjoy while you eat as well as ample parking.
Check out the trains
Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad is the best way to see the entire park as it weaves along the Cuyahoga River. The trains run Wednesday-Sunday during the peak season (July-Nov). Ticket prices range from $16 in coach (with discounts for seniors and children) to $36 in the executive car.
