Why we need Safe Harbors…

Maine coastline

While exploring the Park Loop Road in Acadia this summer, I noticed that Maine is a land of contrasts. The jagged coastline undulates along the far reaches of the eastern United States, with waves crashing along the rocky shoreline.

As you go further inland, the turbulent Atlantic ocean, gives way to smooth harbors with water like glass. Sailboats sit patiently, in the serene water, waiting, resting, for their next adventure out of the harbor. As I glanced at these boats, unmoving, in the tranquil water, I reflected on the importance of having safe harbors in our own lives. Our lives today can feel like we are constantly battling turbulent water. Busy schedules keep us from getting the proper rest and quietude that our bodies and minds need. Criticism, anger and divisiveness, in the news, and in our relationships with others, can steal our peace.

Make sure to create safe harbors in your life for yourself and your children. This might mean turning off the news, removing things from our schedules, getting out in nature, taking time to be still, and learning to swallow our criticism of others. Just like the sailboats in the harbor, we need moments to rest and be still.

We all need our homes to be places of serenity and security.
